Ohai y'all!

It's been quite a while. Things are still crazy, school is going great and I'm still working with Candlelighters. I've been getting my creative fix through Pinterest (you can check my boards out here). Every time I log in I see something amazing. Here are a few of my favorites!

How amazing is this room?! ^^ That intense Tiffany blue is the key to my heart.

I could definitely live with this as my entry way. It's so bright and makes me feel instantly happy. That's always a good thing when coming home! ;)

a long overdue update

I was working like the busy bee I am, when I realized that I couldn't remember the last time I put a post up. SHAME. Things are as crazy busy as ever, and here is a quick update!

I'm pulling a 4.0 in grad school - it's insane in a good way.
I quit smoking on Jan 2 (!!!) so I could run a half marathon in May.
I'm experimenting with veganism, right now, I'm a "vegan before dinner" (thank you Mark Bittman).
I've been elected as the board president of Candlelighters. Some days I want to quit, but some days it's pretty awesome.
My office is done!! Well - almost. Here is a picture of a clean corner.

The first and most important is that I'm still here! I'm wrapping up my second quarter in grad school and am in full swing with a new project (more on that later).

I have not forgotten about my spare room, or about my front yard. However, both have been sadly neglected over the last month. I'm vowing to get my spare room done by the end of the year. I have December off of school, so that will free up a lot of time. Nothing quite like Christmas music and redecorating!

In addition to my full-time job and being a full-time student, I'm also totally immersing myself in my new role on the board of directors for Candlelighters. It's such an awesome organization. I did a happy dance this weekend when I conquered a little HTML problem I was having while updating the website (HTML not being my strong suit). We have a few awesome events coming up, so I'm in planning mode. For more information, check us out on Facebook, and follow us on Twitter (updated by yours truly).

Pertinent to this blog, I did re-vamp my bathroom. New shelving, new window treatments, new decor, etc. It reminded me how much I love to improve my home. That being said, it's definitely reignited my determination to finish my spare room/office.

Busy busy bee!

It seems like I've been going 100 miles per hour for the past three weeks! I'm way too excited to have a bit of time this weekend to get my schedule in order and work on my office.

Speaking of the office - I made a delightful discovery. I don't need to prime the pine paneling like I thought I would. The gray color I chose looks exactly the same with zero, one or two coats under it. This will save a lot of time, which I of course love. Cody and I are going to finish up painting tomorrow. I made sure to take some before pictures so I could share them with you guys once the project is done.

When I have a spare minute, I find myself faux-shopping (filling up my cart online with everything I could possibly want from a site, then closing the window before I actually buy anything) at Mod Cloth - one of my absolute favorite sites. The second I have extra cash, I know exactly where I'll be spending it! I love the indie designers they feature, and the beautifully designed dresses. Be sure to check the site out - you definitely won't be disappointed!

I have a confession...I've been cheating on you.

I know, I know. I'm a hussy. But I got a Tumblr blog and I've been playing with it, and having way too much fun. Remember - Tumblr and I don't have what you and I have. We have history, we have a shared love of pretty things, and we have fabulousness.

First - let's get this out of the way. The Christian Dior Couture show was, it was...I don't even know how to describe it. The colors, the hand-painted fabric - one word: BRILLIANT. The entire show was the epitome of fabulous. The pièce de résistance was a black and yellow dress that actually took my breath away.

Today,we're going to have a quick chat about the state of our nation's workplace environments. My coworker just sent me an article that goes against my entire belief system: people saying it's "inappropriate" to wear peep toe shoes to work! They interviewed lawyers. Read the post here. I have a few words for the first lawyer mentioned.

Dear Sir,
The fact that you find it inappropriate to "flash a sexy red-toe pedicure" at work has lead me to the conclusion that you are obviously not getting laid. Please remedy this as soon as possible so that you can release all of that sexual frustration and get back to being a soul-crushing lawyer.

To love me, is to love my shoes. I'm known for amassing an unhealthy number of shoes - with a still-above-average obsession with peep toed platforms. That being said, Sam Edelman is one of my go-to shoe designers. The styles are fresh, current and creative. I intended to pick my five fave looks from their fall 2010 collection...but alas...there was too much hotness. Enjoy shoes that I'm POSITIVE I cannot live without.

Despite Oscar's lack of physical prowess - he is really cute and appreciates nice things. His current Coach collar is getting a bit dingy, so I've been perusing other options. Although I think Oscar would look AMAZING in Burberry - it's *just* out of our price range. While checking in on Pinterest, I came across a Christine Martinez's board, which featured doggy-approved products. I saw these collars and think they're fabulous. They're from the Urban Animal Scientist and I cannot wait to buy Oscar one (or two).

In an age where it is increasingly uncommon to receive a paper invitation to anything other than a wedding and graduation ceremony, it is nice to know that there is a chic, sophisticated and easy way to send e-vites.

A co-worker recently introduced me to Paperless Post - and I'm smitten! I've already sent two e-vites - each designed suitably (and tastefully) for the occasion. If you're looking to send out e-vites you can be proud to say came from your email account - check this site out.

My absences are becoming more and more common, but at least this time, I have a reason: I've started grad school! I'm pursuing a master's degree in public administration with an emphasis in non-profit leadership. I'm now a full time employee, full time student and am all-the-time-tired. BUT - it will be worth it in the end.

Now for something pretty.

I'd love to have a little beach house to decorate. I don't need anything expansive or high-end, just cozy and well-decorated. Here's some inspiration.

Although I haven't been updating very often, I'm fearing that my posts will become even more sporadic. I was recently accepted to graduate school and start classes next week. I am excited about this new chapter of my life and am determined to excel in this program.

That being said, I still plan on working on my little landscaping project. I think gardening will be good stress relief to escape from the chaos that will be a full time job and being a full time grad student.

In other news - I just downloaded the ShakeItphoto on my iPhone. I absolutely love the contrast of the pictures, and the fact that it gives me another excuse to shake my phone (it'll give UrbanSpoon a break). You can download the app for just $.99! I snapped this picture of Oscar over the weekend. I was also playing around on my break at work and took snapped a shot of the flowers.

My yard is infamously disheveled. The grass is usually mowed, but that's about it. The landscaping (used in the loosest sense of the word) is non-existent, save for one barely-hanging-on evergreen clematis and a 2-year-old hydrangea.

I'm going to spend the summer rehabbing my front yard. It will take some time, especially because I'm broke. BUT, with a little help from my dad, my boyfriend and the Lowe's credit department, I should be able to get the front yard in decent shape. I'll be sure to post some before pictures prior to starting. The plan now is design, edit, budget, source material. I have a few plants in mind, and some ideas, but I want to keep it neat and informal. I'm thinking a modern take on French/European country gardens. I like the whimsy, but don't want it to look messy. Stay tuned for updates...

There's something about the 1940s that has such an era of romance. A decade marred by violence and the horrors of war also produced our Greatest Generation, and a whole lotta glamour! I would love to get dressed for dinner in a hat, gloves, the whole bit.

One of my favorite things was given to me by the beautiful woman in the photo below: my grandmother. She gave me a mink stole and matching mink pillbox hat. *GASP - FUR!!* I know - but the little guy who died for my inherited treasures would have gladly sacrificed himself for how fabulous these pieces are. Once I get a camera that will do them justice, I'll post. Until then - enjoy this piece of nostalgia. This is my grandma and grandpa walking down the street in Portland, looking like they're going to paint the town red...and not to mention fabulous.

It's such a lovely day outside. If I could be anywhere, right now, I do believe I'd like to be sitting at one of my favorite little wineries, Vin du Lac, in Lake Chelan, WA.

I've been pretty slammed lately - but need to get back into the swing of things. This *might* have something to do with the fact that all of the fashion blogs are getting ready for spring and the looks for Spring 2010 are HAWT.

The post that inspired my "comeback"? Refinery 29's post about 5 looks for spring. The outfits are perfection and I could not be more excited to grab some essentials (I'm loving the cropped blazer in look 4). The only trend that is missing is my official favorite for the season: heels and socks.

My goal for this spring is to pull off the outfit below. I have some distressed denim shorts and some H&M opaque stockings that would totally fit the bill. Now...where to wear such an outfit? Ideas?

My cousin sent me a text message asking if I've taking a bereavement day off of work because I really, really heart Alexander McQueen. I'm still at the office, but am saddened by his suicide. He was such a brilliant designer, and I hope that his legacy will live on. Here are a few of my favorites from his Spring 2010 line.

But I've been on the beach! I've been hanging out in Siesta Key, Florida: my new favorite beach town. The people are friendly, the food is wonderful and the drinks are...potent... :)

I've included a shot of a fantastic little coffee shop, LeLu Coffee. The staff there is super friendly, and the coffee and food was beyond delicious (I'm especially a fan of the Costa Rican Breakfast). I'll post more as soon as I get the pictures off of my camera. I'm not sure if I captured it well enough to do it justice - but the sand on Siesta Key Beach is like walking in powdered sugar...simply breathtaking.

I don't think they had "sophistication" in mind when they slapped the Chili's Too in the Atlanta airport together. BUT - I'm drinking wine and making the best of it. I am enroute to the Florida Keys. Although I'm alone, a little wine and a design magazine make me feel loved. :)

I picked up this month's Veranda. While perusing their site - I came across this article on John Saladino's Soho apartment. His inspiration? "Girl with the Pearl Earring" - which is at the same time sophisticated and a bit haunting. I have to say - his interpretation of the movie and famous painting is top-notch. The palette and the unexpected furniture gatherings (example: the oh-so-right-now notion of a sofa in place of dining room chairs) is fun, chic and completely beautiful. Enjoy!!

It's a Monday, it's cloudy and I'm going to the Florida Keys on Saturday. I definitely caught myself day dreaming this morning of sun, sand and the ocean. I wanted to share a little bit of my vacation excitement and highlight a few favorites from the Emilio Pucci Resort 2010 collection. Peter Dundas did a great job creating edgy, versatile pieces that still feel accessible. I'm LOVING the all-white ensemble. Who has your favorite resort collection this season?

People who have seen my closet know that I might like to buy shoes. Maybe. And display them. There are many reasons why I love shoes - but I think it's mostly that they can change any outfit, and they always fit no matter how much weight you gain/lose. I happen to have a particular affinity for peep toe pumps, but I don't discriminate.

When people look at upcoming fashion trends (for our purposes, the spring/summer 2010 shows) - they tend to take the footwear literally and say things like "no one could ever wear that" or "that is hideous!" Just like when looking at clothes on the runway, which is the wrong approach. Runway collections are not the same as ready-to-wear collections. Stop trying to envision yourself wearing the over-the-top outfit Marc Jacobs put his model in and look at it more as art. Runway pieces are statement pieces. They'll be edited for everyday wear - but if everyday wear is what designers sent down the runway, we'd be bored, disappointed and stagnant.

All of that was to prepare you for what some may say are "really ugly" "impossible" shoes. These shoes are not meant to be worn by the masses - they'll be edited down to an easily-consumable version of themselves. Here are some of the spring/summer 2010 collection shoes that I love (and that you will likely see modified versions of in Nordstrom within the next two years).

Remember - think art, not utility!

PS - I might be of the opinion that Valentino's black pumps are the most fabulous things I've seen in ages. Just sayin'...

Tea rose had an "old-fashioned" rep for a while, but as you can see from TIG's post - the colors are inspiring. I've been trying to figure out how to brighten up a dark corner in my house where the dining area is (totally informal). I can't find a chandelier that doesn't look huffy, but I need something with a casually elegant feel.

Enter Ballard Design! I'm in love with their cage lights. The clean lines still look crisp without being ultra-modern. They definitely have a vintage feel to them, which is perfect for my space. Now...how to get the cash...

I caught Hermès' new ad campaign on Dress, Design & Decor and I have to say - it is absolutely stunning. It's whimsical, fun, chic and just beautiful. As Daniella points out, there is definitely a fairytale theme to the campaign, but it's so modern - there is no "been-there-done-that" vibe. How many times have these images been played out through years of campaigns, yet the Hermès ads feel fresh, young and vibrant. Kudos to them for the Spring/Summer 2010 campaign - truly a job well done.

I stumbled across Slumber Design's blog today and knew that I loved it because of this post. I had a lilac room when I lived with my parent's house, but the deep purples contrasting with the whites in this picture are stunning. I'm a big fan of bold, dark colors offset by white trim or furniture - and the picture above illustrates exactly why I love it. The purple is just enough to make a statement, but not enough to overpower a room. Brilliant!

I've heard a million times not to wear horizontal stripes for fear of looking wider. Whatever. Stripes are fantastic, playful and if accessorized correctly, formal. I've always been a big fan of the 1940s aesthetic. I have framed black and white photos of my grandparents from right after WWII - and they both look incredibly chic. There is something about the nostalgia, and maybe the hope that radiated off of that generation. Imagine my delight when this popped up on Urban Outfitter's blog!

I rang in the new year in Las Vegas. Good times were had by all, but I did come home with a cold. No doubt the fact that my only nutrition came from booze had something to do with it. Don't judge.

Things are, indeed, changing. Mostly for the good, even if I can't see it yet. Changing your entire thought process is a challenge, but I'm working on it (despite what anyone else thinks). Some days are worse than others, but on the bad days I'm still able to get back up. That, my friends, is progress.

Goals for this year:
Try to be better with money (I'm being serious)
Don't be so hard on myself
Give people the benefit of the doubt

Those that keep tabs on me IRL know that 2009 has been a bit rough. I think it's time I take to my blog again, although there might be the occasional non-snarky post. I'm just warning you now. I'm trying to make some changes in my life - and let's be real: change fucking sucks. With that in mind, I read this today and thought "I should post this somewhere." Since it's way too long for Facebook - PT&C is the lucky recipient of something that actually made me stop and think.

I must say a word about fear. It is life's only true opponent. Only fear can defeat life. It is a clever, treacherous adversary, how well I know. It has no decency, respects no law or convention, shows no mercy. It goes for your weakest spot, which it finds with unerring ease. It begins in your mind, always. One moment you are feeling calm, self-possessed, happy. Then fear, disguised in the garb of mild-mannered doubt, slips into your mind like a spy. Doubt meets disbelief and disbelief tries to push it out. But disbelief is a poorly armed foot soldier. Doubt does away with it with little trouble. You become anxious. Reason comes to do battle for you. You are reassured. Reason is fully equipped with the latest weapons technology. But, to your amazement, despite superior tactics and a number of undeniable victories, reason is laid low. You feel yourself weakening, wavering. Your anxiety becomes dread.

Fear next turns fully to your body, which is already aware that something terribly wrong is going on. Already your lungs have flown away like a bird and your guts have slithered away like a snake. Now your tongue drops dead like an opossum, while your jaw begins to gallop on the spot. Your ears go deaf. Your muscles begin to shiver as if they had malaria and your knees to shake as though they were dancing. Your heart strains too hard, while your sphincter relaxes too much. And so with the rest of your body. Every part of you, in the manner most suited to it, falls apart. Only your eyes work well. They always pay proper attention to fear.

Quickly you make rash decisions. You dismiss your last allies: hope and trust. There, you've defeated yourself. Fear, which is but an impression, has triumphed over you.

The matter is difficult to put into words. For fear, real fear, such as shakes you to your foundation, such as you feel when you are brought face to face with your mortal end, nestles in your memory like a gangrene: it seeks to rot everything, even the words with which to speak of it. So you must fight hard to express it. You must fight hard to shine the light of words upon it. WSU's Administration - Stripping Cougars of Their Pride One Tradition at a Time

Alright - time for a more serious post (well - as serious I can get on a blog that primarily focuses on the most trivial shit on Earth).

It has been rumored that Washington State University's (as well as the University of Washington's) administration is seriously considering moving the Apple Cup game to Quest Field. Here is why that that would blow:

Obviously, this is not fair to all Cougars who aren’t from the Westside. It’s unreasonable, especially in today’s economy, to expect college students from Spokane/Tri-Cities/etc to drive to Seattle and pay for a hotel room to attend the biggest game of the year.

Permanent home-field advantage for UW (yes, I recognize that Quest Field isn't Husky Stadium, but still) – enough said.

While the deal would bring more revenue to WSU, how much revenue would be lost to the city of Pullman? Pullman's local economy depends on the revenue generated from big WSU weekends.

Ding to the Cougar spirit: WSU prides itself on having one of the most loyal alumni in the country. Even when I was making $13/hour at my first (really shitty) marketing job after I graduated, I still donated to WSU because the Cougar community is unlike anything else. We stick together and are really proud of our campus and school. The fact that the administration is considering taking away one of the highlights of fall semester while simultaneously raising tuition is understandably frustrating for students. Times are tough – but bottom lines aren’t everything. The administration should recognize that keeping the Cougar spirit alive and healthy is just as critical as the extra revenue that would be genereted by taking the Apple Cup away from Pullman. Happy students who had a great college experience turn into happy alumni who join the Alumni Association and donate money.

I get that it’s an uphill battle since the money is needed desperately…but there has to be another way to generate that revenue than stripping WSU of one of its greatest traditions.

What's next - moving the homecoming game to the west side because so many alumni live here?

Ashton Kutcher has become the first "Twitter Millionaire" - beating CNN and BritBrit. That being said, I am creating my emergency survival kit and am going to finish that bomb shelter I've been working on (starting buidling that baby when Kanye West stopped typing in all CAPS).

I read today that Oprah now has a Twitter account and is doing a show on it. Something tells me that after, I don't know...35 minutes on Twitter, Oprah will peace out and Gayle will be responding to your Tweets. Just sayin'.

Point of this post? There isn't one. I'm just over celebrities getting press coverage because they can manage to post their inane thoughts in 140 characters or less.

Princess ZacZac will NOT be staring in the remake/murder of 80's classic Footloose. Instead of taking this as a sign from the Hollywood Gods to back the fuck off, producers are now eyeing Princess ZacZac's heartthrob competition in the tween world (calm down, it's not Sparkles Pattinson) - CHASE CRAWFORD?! When American Idol started this year, I was wondering who would fill Kristy Lee Cook's devil's hooves as the object of my rage. I'm pleased to say that the spot has been filled by shrieking jackal Tatiana Del Toro who will face America's firing squad next week when she sings. And I've got my rifle fucking loaded and ready to go.

I don't really need to go into all the reasons why Tatiana makes me want to shove a mini-hot curling iron in my ear and open it. Just watch the clip above and everything will become clear to you. You'll wish you could give your ears an acid enema. And if you can't watch the whole clip, just to skip to the end and look at the faces of everyone around her. They are wishing for that acid ear enema too.

Tatiana isn't a bad singer, it's just everything else! When she laughs, garage doors go flying, cars combust and dogs run into traffic. Bitch sounds like a hyena on helium getting DPed.

It's like her laugh is taunting me to punch her in the mouth. Everyone else is hearing "Ahahahahahahaha," but I hear "Slap me, bitch! Slap me!" I bet the people in her family have already lost the feeling in their hands from sitting on them so much to keep from whacking her ass.

While I was on 405 - I was trying to get around an annoying Jack in the Box semi. While doing so - I caught a glimpse of the advertisement on side of the truck - and couldn't help but whip out my cell phone and take a picture.

Seriously?! Yes - all the girls in America would gladly turn down a diamond in exchange for some shit-tastic salad from a fast food chain. A salad, I might add, that likely has more calories in it than your cheeseburger meal. WTF kind of ad campaign is this? It's about as preposterous as your significant other coming home with a chicken club salad from Jack in the Box instead of diamond earrings for Valentine's Day. That would go over well.

A few weeks ago, my coworker sent me this mind-boggling post from Geekologie about the "Bacon Explosion." As proof that I can't make shit like this up - see the original post here.

Now - after I got over the fact that Satan probably eats this as an appetizer before he downs a whole cow and a gallon of gin every evening - I more or less forgot about the 5,000-calorie meat log.

Until I went to my cousin's to watch the UFC fight on Saturday. Imagine my surprise when M & J roll in with their own hypertension-inducing version of the Bacon Explosion shit show.

Pros - I hear it was delicious (no - I did not try it because I *heart* life).
Cons - I could actually hear life-spans shortening...

I've included a picture, taken from my cell phone, as Exhibit A that the Atkins revolution lives on!

BTW - if you're wondering what Satan eats while he's waiting for his meat log to cook, check with Paula Deen. That bitch makes his favorite light bite!

I don't want to panic anyone - but lets talk about the economy. And by talk, I mean develop a debilitating alcohol problem after every person in the Seattle area is laid off and homeless. Seriously.

A lot can happen in one day: Boeing to lay off 10,000 people (half of them local) and Starbucks upped the ante from last week, announcing they will actually lay off about 6,700. Add in the Microsoft layoffs, and that is a shitload of people unemployed, flooding the job market.

I'm worried for my friends and family who work for these Washington giants, and for my friends and family who are still unemployed. Get your blackmail list and shank out, because that is the only way anyone is going to get a new job in Seattle.

Now for a few cost-saving tips to survive Depression 2.0:

Brew your own vodka! This is now legal in Washington state - I'm not joking.
Steal cable and Internet - don't act like you didn't do it in college.

I get that question a lot. My job is actually evolving, as things do when companies are forced to cut budgets and come up with innovative ways to market themselves.

Typically, when I explain my field, or my job specifically, I am met with blank stares. Unless you're in this industry, it's tough to wrap your mind around it. That being said - I give you this video! It's like a beginners course in online marketing and how user-generated content feeds into the more traditional marketing mediums that everyone is cozy with. Now - read that sentence again, slowly, since I probably lost you with "user-generated content." It's just a fancy term for websites like You Tube.

A coworker sent this to me this morning, and after browsing my usual blogs, I've discovered that Stains is everywhere!

Essentially, Stains is a hot mess of a dog who was featured on E!'s The Soup. Stains loves to eat (probably eating his feelings because of his broke-ass name) and some witch trainer was trying to get Stains to knock it off. Stains can only stare at that plate of delicious cupcakes and eat them with his bug eyes. New age - new blog.

My first post will honor Chrysler, and the shit show ad campaign they launched in response to receiving a federal bailout. Because really - what better way to thank the American public for their unwilling financial support than bashing them in the face it?!

Back story - Chrysler was dying to find a way to tell American taxpayers that they really appreciate getting their asses saved from certain financial ruin. They managed to convince Congress to give them millions of tax payer dollars so they could resume making ridiculously inefficient vehicles. Upon receiving said money, someone got the awesome idea to write a thank you note to America. After spending several hundred thousand dollars on full page ads that ran in the WSJ and USA Today, as well as launching a blog, America decided to tell Chrysler what we really think of their gratitude. It came across as a big "F YOU" and Chrysler promptly killed the blog. Fortunately for us, The Consumerist managed to yank some of the better comments off of the cashed site and posted them here.

TheNewMarketing brought up the fact that Chrysler's PR department (or agency) must be blind, deaf and stupid for allowing this to make it all the way to print. At a time where fiscally-crunched companies are coming up with innovative ways to stay alive, Chrysler decides to waste money and piss off their consumer base all in one fell swoop. Good work guys. When we talk about being more efficient, this is not what we mean.

My only question - do you think Chrysler wanted to get ad placement next to the classifieds since that's where an increasing number of people flip to first LOOKING FOR A JOB?! Nah - that would be tacky.
